Who We Roost For

Good people. Small businesses. Worth knowing.

One of our favorite things about running Sassin Rustic Roost has been the people we've met along the way.

We believe in supporting small businesses, local farms, rescues, makers, and the people behind them whenever we can. Not because somebody paid us to say nice things about them, but because when we find good people doing good things, we think other people should know about them too.

These are a few of our Friends of the Roost.

The Craft Marketplace

Erica

The Craft Marketplace

Sometimes people come to the Roost for eggs and we end up finding someone we really want other people to know.

That's how we met Erica.

Erica is the woman behind The Craft Marketplace, but her work and her heart extend beyond her business. She is also a midwife who provides gender-inclusive care—something we especially appreciate because making people feel welcomed, respected, and comfortable exactly as they are matters.

We love finding small-business owners who bring a little personality to what they do, care about their community, and aren't afraid to create their own space in the world. Erica checks those boxes.

Why we love her: Good conversation, inclusive care, supporting local, and she clearly has excellent taste in egg suppliers.

Silver Oaks Farm LLC

Megan

Silver Oaks Farm LLC

Around here, we have a soft spot for people who understand that farm life is equal parts rewarding, exhausting, hilarious, messy, and occasionally makes you question every decision that led you here.

Megan and Silver Oaks Farm LLC are part of our local farm community, and we're happy to have them among our Friends of the Roost.

Supporting another small farm isn't about competition. There is plenty of room for all of us. It's about building connections, sharing knowledge, helping one another when we can, and supporting the people who are putting in the work every single day.

Why we love them: Local farms supporting local farms. That's exactly how it should be.

ABTK9

Ashley

ABTK9

There are dog people... and then there are dog people.

ABTK9 is a professional dog training, boarding, and enrichment facility in Elizabeth City offering individualized services including private training, day training, behavioral work, and boarding. Their approach recognizes something we firmly believe around here: every animal is an individual. Training and care shouldn't be one-size-fits-all.

Our relationship with ABTK9 goes beyond simply knowing another local business. We've worked together when dogs have needed help finding the right homes, and we have seen the amount of work that goes into trying to give animals—and their people—a better chance at success.

When you're dealing with animals, cute only gets you so far. Knowledge, structure, patience, consistency, and actually understanding behavior matter.

Why we love them: They care about the dog in front of them, not just checking a box and sending them out the door.

Colonial Canine

Cassie, Amanda

Colonial Canine

Another member of our local dog-loving circle is Colonial Canine LLC in Elizabeth City.

Colonial Canine offers daycare, boarding, and individualized dog training. Their training services can address everything from basic manners and leash skills to confidence building, reactivity, and helping dogs learn how to handle real-world situations.

Their daycare program also focuses on structured play and enrichment, with dogs grouped appropriately based on factors such as play style, energy level, and size.

Basically, they understand that dogs have personalities, needs, quirks, boundaries, and occasionally opinions stronger than the humans paying the bill.

We can respect that.

Why we love them: Local people putting their time and energy into giving dogs quality care, enrichment, training, and a safe place to land while their humans are away.

Granny's Southern Lemonade

Sarah

Granny's Southern Lemonade

If you've been around local events in our area, there's a good chance you've seen Granny's Southern Lemonade—and if you haven't, you're missing out.

Sarah is the woman behind Granny's, serving fresh-squeezed lemonade and bringing plenty of personality along with it.

Our connection with Granny's isn't limited to lemonade, either. Some pretty adorable four-legged additions to the Roost have come into our lives through this friendship, so Sarah has officially earned herself permanent Friend of the Roost status.

Small businesses like Granny's are exactly why we love shopping local. You're not handing your money to some giant corporation and disappearing into a transaction number. You're supporting an actual person, their family, their ideas, their very long event days, and probably a ridiculous amount of behind-the-scenes work nobody ever sees.

Plus... lemonade.

Why we love her: She's local, she's one of ours, and she keeps showing up and doing the work. The lemonade certainly doesn't hurt.

Why Friends of the Roost?

Because community isn't built by constantly asking, "What's in it for me?"

Sometimes it's as simple as telling somebody, Hey, this person does good work. Go check them out.

Every business featured here is independently owned and operated. Our recommendations come from our own experiences, relationships, and connections with the people behind them. Unless we specifically tell you otherwise, these aren't paid advertisements or sponsored placements.

They're just people we think deserve a little extra attention.

Are you a local small business, farm, rescue, maker, or community organization?

Come say hello.

We're always interested in meeting good people doing good things—and there's always room for another Friend of the Roost.
